The
Benbecula History society is part of a Federation of History Societies in the
Uists and Barra and the wider Western isles.
In the Uists and Barra there are six history societies or Comunn Eachdraidh
(Gaelic for history societies). These are; Bernary, North Uist, Benbecula, South
Uist, Eriskay and Barra History Societies.
Benbecula is rich in local history with Nunton being the home of Clanranald
following the burning of Ormiclate Castle after the battle of Sherifmuir.
MEMBERSHIP>>
Although the society maintains a register of members we believe that anyone
who belongs to Benbecula or has an association with the island is technically
a member without the need to register.
However, if do you wish to register in order to recieve specific newsletters
and become part of our mailing list then contact
us
Geographically
Benbecula is divided into fifteen 'communities' called townships. The townships
are (from North to South) Gramsdale, Kyles Flodda, Uachdar, Dunganichy, Balivanich,
Aird, Nunton, Griminish, Torlum, Lionaclate,
Creagorry, Hacklet, Kilerivagh, Uisgevagh
and Petersport.
It is the history society's intention to compile a collection of reminiscences
and photographs for each of the townships.
As these are completed, selections will be posted on this site (the entire booklets
will be available to purchase). Residents and those from afar with connections
to the island will be able to contact us and contribute
their own recollections.
At present a selection of our photographic material on the Nunton townships
of Nunton and Creagorry is available. GO
